Common questions before a mobile notary appointment.
What identification can I use?
Hawaiʻi law generally permits a passport, driver's license, government-issued non-driver ID, or another satisfactory government ID containing the signer's photograph and signature. Qualifying identification may be valid or expired no more than three years before the notarial act.
Should I sign the document before the appointment?
Usually, wait if the signature must be witnessed by the notary. If the document requires only an acknowledgment, a prior signature may sometimes be acknowledged before the notary. When in doubt, leave the signature blank until the appointment.
Do you provide witnesses?
Clients are encouraged to provide their own qualified witness(es) whenever possible. If you cannot provide a required witness, ask about availability before scheduling. Oahu Notary Services may be able to arrange one witness for +$25 by advance request, subject to availability and the document's witness requirements. Witness availability is not guaranteed, so please confirm the required number and qualifications with the document preparer or receiving agency.
What if the document does not say which notarial act is required?
We cannot choose the notarial act for you. Contact the document preparer, receiving agency, or a licensed attorney and ask whether an acknowledgment, jurat, or another act is required.
Do hospital or care-facility appointments cost extra?
No special hospital or health-care facility surcharge is added. Standard mobile pricing applies unless the appointment is a full estate-planning signing or another service with separate pricing.
Can a notary explain the document or tell me what to sign?
No. A notary verifies identity and performs the requested notarial act. Oahu Notary Services does not provide legal advice, choose legal provisions, or explain the legal effect of documents.
